NS Condemn Privacy Proposals
The Newspaper Society has criticised proposals by the Lord Chancellor to create a new civil law of infringement of privacy.
The NS criticises proposals in the consultation paper as being unclear and unworkable, and if made law it “could stop regional newspapers’ investigation and revelation of matters of legitimate interest to their local communities”. The Society points out that the paper itself accepts its uncertainty as to the ambit of the law, application of defences, amount of damages, application of prior restraint, and the likely use of the new law.
