Convergence To Increase

A new report from Continental Research forecasts that 7.9 million UK adults will use VoIP at least once a year in 2010.

It adds that over the next 12 months, 43% of those ever using VoIP in the UK, Germany, Japan and the US expect to increase their usage. In addition, 17% of those not suing VoIP expect to use it in the next year.

A recent report from JupiterResearch said that VoIP will top 25 million US households by 2012, driven by greater broadband subscriptions and expansion by cable operators into new markets (see VoIP To Top 25 Million US Households).

According to Continental, in the UK using VoIP for international calls helps drive the take-up of VoIP. 51% of UK VoIP users are using VoIP for international calls, where cost savings are most pronounced.

Internet radio is revealed to be popular in the UK, where the number of frequencies available via normal radio is limited.

Continental says that by 2010, 10.9 million adults in the UK will listen to the radio via the internet at least once a year.

The market research firm says that IPTV, in terms of popularity, is still some way behind internet radio and that although some companies have invested heavily in the platform, it is limited in the short term by the fact that it generally needs to be watched on a PC screen.

28% of those who have ever watched live internet TV in the UK, Germany, Japan and the US, expect to increase the amount they watch in the next year, whilst 11% of those not viewing expect to do so in the next year.

In April, MRG published a forecast which said that IPTV subscriber numbers in Europe and Asia will reach 63.3 million by 2011 (see IPTV Subscriber Numbers Continue To Grow).

Meanwhile, Continental adds that by 2010, 11.5 million adults are forecast to access the internet via their mobile phones, with 2.8 million predicted to watch TV on their handsets.
