March ABCs: A better month for the dailies

March ABCs: A better month for the dailies

With the country starting to re-open, March circulations started to show signs of recovery. The entire market was up 4.7% PoP with all titles showing gains across the month

Here are the key points to take away from the data:

1. All dailies were up period on period

Although all newsbrands saw a dip in circulations year-on-year, March saw period-on-period increases across all titles with the Financial Times and the Daily Mail both recording the highest rise at 2% or 1,985 and 19,218 copies respectively.

2. The Sunday market was up 0.8% on last month

Overall, the Sunday market was up 0.8% PoP, with the Observer, the Mail on Sunday and the Sunday Mirror all reporting increases. The Mail on Sunday lead the way with a PoP rise of 2.2% or 18,551 copies.

3. The London freebies market continues to grow

The Metro (UK footprint – Mon-Fri) saw its circulation rise period-on-period (PoP) by 95,473 copies, or 15.9%, across the country.

Elsewhere, as the capital city started to open up, the London freebie market rose by 10.7% PoP, with the London Evening Standard up on February by 0.7% (3,638 copies) and the Metro (London) up 24.8% (85,156 copies).

It should be noted that circulation figures for the Sun, Sun on Sunday, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, Times and Sunday Times have not been publicly reported by ABC, following the implementation of new reporting options which allow publishers to opt out of making their figures publicly available.
