New Head Of Programmes Appointed At E4

Channel 4 has appointed Murray Boland as the new head of programmes at its digital entertainment channel E4.
Boland, currently head of programmes at MTV UK, will take up the position in January. He replaces Andrew Newman, who is going on to become head of entertainment at Channel 5.
E4’s general manager, Dan Brooke, said: “Murray’s programme making pedigree and in depth experience of multi-channel TV make him the ideal person to help take E4 to the next level.”
As an assistant producer at Planet 24, the independent production company that created The Big Breakfast, Boland was responsible for producing programmes such as The Sunday Show and The Word.
Boland’s appointment to E4, which launched as an entertainment channel for the under 35’s at the beginning of the year (see E4 Launch Date Set For January), comes as the BBC works to put forward fresh proposals for its own light entertainment channel for 16-34 year olds, BBC3 (see Dyke “Disappointed” As BBC3 Refused).
The government rejected the BBC’s plans to relaunch BBC Choice as BBC3 last month (see Government Says No To BBC3), on the grounds that its plans were not truly distinctive in an already crowded market, which includes the likes of E4.
