New Editor For IPC Soap Magazine

IPCtx has appointed Hellen Gardner as editor of Soaplife magazine. Gardner was previously co-ordinating editor for the title, working with previous editor Mike Hollingsworth, and has been deputy editor of both Chat and Woman’s Own. She takes up the role with immediate effect.

Soaplife launched in 1999 as a spin off to What’s On TV, IPC’s most successful TV listings magazine, whose 1 million+ circulation puts it in the top three within the sector. After registering an initial circulation of 124,000, Soaplife’s circulation reached above 130,000 by the end of 2000. However, in the July-December audit, a 9.8% year on year fall to 118,000 meant that its lead over monthly soap rival, Attic Futura’s All About Soap was diminished to just 7,000 (see ABC Jul – Dec 2001 Celebrity and TV Listings Magazines).

The pressure to perform has been increased for magazines at IPC since last year’s AOL Time Warner takeover (see AOL Buys IPC Media For £1.15bn), which resulted in the closure of a clutch of under-performing titles (see IPC Closes Six Magazines).
