Box office down nearly a third on 2019

The total box office takings for August for the UK & Ireland were £62.80m as cinema takings fail to reach pre-pandemic levels.

Year-to-date, the box office registered more than £682m, which is down nearly a third (29%) compared to the first eight months of 2019.

David Leitch’s action film Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt, Joey King and Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the top film in August, grossing £8.6m since its opening on 3 August 2022.

It is the second-highest grossing 15+ rated film so far this year behind DC’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson.

Family movies DC League of Super-Pets and Minions: The Rise Of Gru came second and third in the August box office table grossing £8.0m and £5.7m this month.

Jordan Peele’s latest horror film Nope took home £1.8m in its opening weekend in mid-August, the second largest take in the genre this year behind Scream with £2.4m.

Nope grossed a total of £6.4m over the rest of the month.

Top Gun: Maverick remained the highest rated film of the year so far and was still in the top 10 most popular films in August at the UK & Ireland box office taking home $4.0m. This brings its UK & Ireland box office total to £81.0m, making it the ninth-highest grossing film of all time, 1% above Titanic and 2% behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
