Mobile Users Continue To Turn To WAP During April
![]()
Mobile internet services attracted 535 million page impressions during April, according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA) and the UK’s four GSM network operators.
The figures reflect the growing popularity of WAP enabled mobile phones, with the daily average number of page impressions for the month rising to 21 million, almost double the figure of 11 million per day for September 2002, when the MDA began issuing WAP statistics.
The MDA believes the increasing total shows that mobile-phone users are utilising their handsets for a wider variety of purposes than ever before.
The most popular WAP sites viewed in April continue to be those offering ringtones and screensavers. However, April also saw an increasing interest in sports and news sites.
The MDA forecasts continued growth in the sector and expects WAP page impressions to reach 8 billion by the end of the year. The industry appears to be well on track for this growth after 560 million page impressions were made during March (see WAP Usage Figures Peak At Half A Billion During March).
Meanwhile, the SMS craze shows no sign of abating and 1.66 billion person to person text messages were sent across the four UK GSM networks during April (see Text Messaging Continues To Blossom During April).
