Pixar’s Up hits the big time
Pixar’s latest feature film Up had the 3rd highest opening weekend of the year, taking an impressive £6.4 million at the box office.
The Disney Digital 3D film, which tells the story of 78 year-old Carl Fredrickson who sets off for the wilds of South America by tying thousands of balloons to his house, also banked the 8th highest opening of all time for an animated film
The only other films to take in more in their opening weekends this year were Ice Age 3, which still holds the top spot of the year with £7.6 million, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which took £6.6 million.
However, Up raced ahead of the competition last weekend. Zombieland came in at number two with much lower takings of £1.2 million, followed by The Invention of Lying‘s £1 million.
In keeping with this weeks upcoming release, Couples Retreat with Vince Vaughn, DCM and British Airways have teamed up to launch a special promotion offering cinema-goers discounts on flights when they see a film at Odeon and Cineworld cinemas across the UK.
