MXR Consortium Joined By Psion And UBC

MXR, which is in the process of bidding for regional digital radio licences (see New Digital Radio Consortium Targets Regions) is to add two new members – UBC Digital and Psion InfoMedia – to its consortium.

Simon Cole, chief executive of UBC Media said, “PC penetration in the UK is amongst the highest in the world. Digital radio will allow MXR to deliver a variety of data applications to these PCs…effectively creating a new market for both radio and data application delivery. We are committed to providing the content which will allow this potential to become a reality.”

Psion is already committed to the development of its own PC-based digital radio receiver, while UBC is expected to supply “innovative” programming. Both companies are to work with MXR on regional licences, create applications and content for a data channel to run on all the multiplexes won by the consortium and also manage other data capacity including the Electronic Programme Guide.

The MXR consortium was founded by Chrysalis Group, Capital Radio, Jazz FM and Guardian Media Group. Between them they own all the analogue licences for the areas they are bidding for digital licences in. Chief executive of Chrysalis, Phil Riley, spoke on behalf of the consortium: “Providing compelling and innovative data is something the MXR consortium partners wanted to do. We’re thrilled to have found the right partners to do it with.” he said.
