New Digital Radio Consortium Targets Regions

A new radio consortium has been formed to bid for regional digital radio businesses in England and Wales. Guardian Media, Capital Radio, Chrysalis and Jazz FM have joined forces under the name MXR to bid for digital multiplexes in the West Midlands, North West, Yorkshire, North East and Severn Estuary/South Wales.

Between them the four shareholders own all the regional analogue licences covered by the five digital licence areas. The companies said that they would exclusively offer their existing key analogue stations – Galaxy, Heart, Century, Jazz and Real Radio – as well as a range of digital-only programming.

Further details of the programming proposals will be released when bids are submitted, the first of which will be its application for the north east of England in October. Richard Huntingford, managing director of Chrysalis, said: “Chrysalis is delighted to be spearheading such a strong consortium that can offer a really compelling range of programme services to drive forward the take-up of digital radio around the country.”
