TV Overnights: Murray’s Centre Court tears draw in bumper BBC audience

Yesterday saw Andy Murray take on Roger Federer in the Wimbledon gentlemen’s singles final, aiming to become the first British male to win the Championship trophy since Fred Perry in 1936.

As expected, BBC1 dominated the Sunday ratings, with an average audience share of 58% between 1.45pm and 6.45pm, and a peak of 16.4 million viewers at 6pm as Roger Federer served for the match, overpowering the Scot who could hold out no longer.

A distraught Murray broke down after the match ended, having been beaten in four sets, but there was nothing to cry about for the BBC. Only BBC2 stole the ratings lead from the broadcaster’s main channel as coverage of the British Grand Prix from Silverstone switched from BBC1 to BBC2.

Peaking at 4.2 million at 1.30pm, once again we were denied a British success, Australian Mark Webber bringing the points home for Red Bull Racing.

On a day where the BBC well and truly ruled the ratings roost, Peter punching Nick for his attempts to show him up at Simon’s birthday brought in an average of 6.1 million viewers for Coronation Street (across HD and standard definition).

Meanwhile, Channel 4’s new series Thelma’s Gypsy Girls, a spin-off (of sorts) of the popular Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, reached a high of 2.6 mllion viewers in the peak time slot.

Once again, the shenanigans in the Big Brother house scored an ace for Channel 5, bringing in its biggest ratings of the day. An average of 1.35 million viewers and 5.6% of the audience tuning in between 9pm and 10pm to hear Adam’s somewhat ungenerous views of his housemates broadcast to them without his knowledge.
