TV Viewing Round-up: June 2012

June was not a great month for republicans who hate sport, as Euro 2012 and numerous royal-related programmes dominated the top programmes list.

Heading the table was BBC One’s coverage of the dire Euro 2012: England v Italy football match, which saw 20.3 million people sit through an Italian master class in missing clear-cut chances and England going out of a tournament on penalties.

Grabbing second spot was ITV1’s transmission of Euro 2012: England v Ukraine, which saw the joint hosts lose to a header from England’s Wayne Rooney. This game pulled in 16.2 million viewers, giving the commercial broadcaster its highest rated programme so far for 2012.

In third place was The Diamond Jubilee Concert, featuring music performances from such diverse acts as Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Grace Jones, JLS, Alfie Boe and Gareth Malone and the Military Wives, attracted an average audience of 15.3 million. This also had the affect of boosting the edition of BBC News shown immediately afterwards, with an impressive 10.7 million staying tuned to what was effectively the jubilee concert’s spin-off show.

Despite media and public criticism for BBC One’s coverage of The Diamond Jubilee Thames Pagent, which included such horrors as Fearne Cotton discussing Jubilee sick bags with singer Paloma Faith, 10.5 million still chose to sit in front of their television sets and see the whole sodden flotilla.

In between a host of matches from Euro 2012, the final of BBC One’s under-performing The Voice (won by erm… does anyone remember?) pulled in 7.8 million viewers. Just one place lower on the programme chart the documentary A Jubilee Tribute To The Queen By The Prince Of Wales gained an audience of 7.7 million.

The only other non-football or Jubilee-related programmes to feature on this month’s chart were part time wrestler Ricky Martin’s win on The Apprentice: The Final and the curfew-breaking Wimbledon 2012: Murray v Baghdatis tennis match, which were both shown on BBC One and seen by audiences a touch under 7 million.
