Grimshaw replaces Moyles as Radio 1 breakfast show host

Nick Grimshaw has been unveiled as the new host of BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show following the announcement that Chris Moyles will be departing at the end of September.

The breakfast show currently has 7.1 million listeners according to Rajar figures (compared to 7.52 million this time last year), and has been presented by Moyles since 2004.

Former late night show host and DJ Grimshaw was revealed as Moyles successor this morning, and at 27 years old appears to be part of the “push for youth” which is being undertaken by Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper.

Only last month the BBC Trust stated that Radio 1 was failing to attract a sufficient audience of under 30s, while a review back in 2009 urged the station to concentrate on 15 to 29-year-old listeners.

Moyles became the longest-serving breakfast show host in Radio 1 history in September 2009, surpassing Tony Blackburn, and announced the news of his departure on air: “We’re off. I wanted to let you know. A couple more months of us, then it’s someone else’s turn. Thank you for listening.”

Radio 1 and Moyles are believed to be discussing a new show for the 38-year-old. In a statement on Moyles departure, Cooper said: “I’d like to thank Chris.

“Quite simply he’s been the most successful breakfast show host in Radio 1 history. He’s done it for more than eight and half years and he’s been fantastic.”
