Channel 5 Has Two England Games In The Net

England’s football World Cup qualifying game against Poland and the England Rugby Union international against Argentina will both be shown live on Channel 5 on Saturday 31 May 1997. This is Channel 5’s first big international sports acquisition.

The Saturday double-match special will be shown on the weekend sports’ magazine show, Turnstyle, headed by Gail McKenna. Highlighting Channel 5’s commitment to sport, director of programmes, Dawn Airey, said, “We will exploit every commercial opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net.” Nick Wilson, controller of sport at Channel 5, said, “This double whammy enables us to demonstrate to sports’ fans exactly how an exciting new channel can package its sports programming.”

This acquisition forms part of a major two year deal between Channel 5 and CSI Ltd, sports rights distributors. The deal also includes over 250 hours of further sports coverage. This will run as part of Channel 5’s late night sports strand, Live and Dangerous, a series of one hour sports specials and a South American soccer show.
