Liberty Looking At TV Expansion
Liberty Publishing, the media company set up by Mohamed al-Fayed, is rumoured to be looking to expand into television with the launch of a new channel.
It is thought that one option being seriously considered is a QVC-style shopping channel which would feature the luxury items sold by stores such as Harrods. It is also believed that Liberty is planning to bid for one of the commercial digital multiplexes which is being offered by the ITC, a move which would pitch it against another rumoured bidder – Carlton Communications (see yesterday’s Carlton To Bid For Digital Services item).
The move by Liberty would not be totally surprising since it has long been known that the group is keen to expand its media interests. Last year it relaunched Punch magazine as well as the unsuccessful Viva! radio station as 963 Liberty Radio. A more high profile launch would suit the company to make up for its unsuccessful bid for the Observer newspaper last March.
