TV Overnights: Emmerdale and Eastenders the only resistance to the Olympics

BBC One’s coverage of the Olympics once again swept the board with total dominance, with the exception of ITV1’s Emmerdale at 7pm and BBC Two’s Eastenders on at 7.30pm.

Emmerdale managed an average audience of 5.6 million, giving it the largest share for its time slot (26.9%), while Eastenders also managed an average of 5.5 million but did not top the Olympic coverage.

At its peak audience, the swimming finals on BBC One (9pm) attracted 8.9 million viewers but the surprise story of the day fell to BBC Three, as Team GB’s woman’s football team beat favourites Brazil at Wembley. 2.5 million tuning in to watch the game.
