BBC Claims Christmas Viewing Victory
It is estimated that eight out of the top ten programmes screened on Christmas Day were shown on BBC1. Only Fools and Horses had 18.7 million viewers while EastEnders came second with 15.9 million. Jurassic Park, another BBC1 offering, was third with 14.5 million people watching. ITV’s highest ranked programme was Coronation Street at seventh with 9.4 million.
The Vicar of Dibley was in fourth place with 14.5 million viewers, followed by Aunties All-New Christmas Bloomers with 13 million and Animal Hospital Goes West with 9.5 million. The Queen’s speech attracted 9.1 million viewers on BBC1 while Noel’s Christmas Presents was watched by 9 million. ITV’s Christmas Night With The Stars managed 8.2 million and came tenth.
It is also estimated that Sunday’s Only Fools And Horses attracted 21.5 million viewers, its highest ever figure. In 1989 and 1992 the show was watched by 20.1 million people.
