A census by IPA shows a further recovery in agency employment. The number of people employed on 1 September 1996 is estimated to have been 12,800 at 220 member agencies, compared with 12,300 at 225 agencies the year before.
The numbers employed still remain lower than the 15,400 in 1989.
The staff increase has been mainly in London agencies. Women now represent 20% of board directors, 44% of other department heads and 48% of all staff.
