ITV Invites Bids For New Current Affairs Shows

The ITV Network Centre has announced that it is planning to extend current affairs programming. The announcement comes following the success of the ‘Monarchy Debate’ programme, which achieved ratings double that expected for factual programmes *Monarchy Debate Breaks Records For ITV.

The Network is inviting the individual ITV companies and independent producers to pitch for two new current affairs strands planned for transmission later this year.

The first is for a ten-week Sunday lunch-time series, designed to alternate with ITV’s live coverage of Formula One motor-racing. It will begin transmission in June. Although this is traditionally a political programming slot, the new show will not centre around government. The programmes should be tough, intelligent innovative and appeal to the younger adult, ABC1 audience.

The second is for six half-hour programmes for the Thursday night current affairs slot. The series has a late summer transmission slot. The programmes are required to be provocative and ground-breaking.

ITV’s Deputy Controller of Factual Programmes, Marion Bowman, said: “We are looking to broaden the range of ITV’s current affairs output, we are expecting imaginative ideas which will generate programmes which get talked about as well as attract good ratings.”

The two commissions will be awarded in March.
