Female Internet Users Grow

The percentage of female Internet users has grown over the past year from 27% to 35% of all UK surfers, according to the latest research from NOP.

Findings also reveal that more than 4.5 million people in Britain have tried the Internet during the past twelve months, with home usage rising from around 420,000 in December 1995 to over 1 million by December 1996. The number of people using the Net most frequently from home increased by over 150% during the same period. This means that just over a quarter of all users in Britain are now using the Internet most frequently from home.

Usage across Britain has also become more uniform during the past twelve months: London and the South no longer dominate, although usage in Yorkshire and the North East is slightly lower than in other regions of the country.

The survey also discovered that only 12% of all users said they were “dissatisfied” with the Internet, and just 3% said that they would expect to stop using the Internet altogether in the next six months.

…Another NOP survey has revealed that the number of WWW users in the UK shopping on-line increased by over 100% during the period between June and December 1996. Over 250,000 people are now shopping on-line each month. The most popular types of purchases were computer hardware (27%) and software (23%) as well as CDs, travel tickets and holidays. Three out of five spent less than £50 whilst one in seven spent more than £500.
