Major Ready For TV Debate

John Major signalled at the weekend that he is ready and willing to engage in a televised debate with Tony Blair, leader of the Labour Party. While details have yet to emerge regarding the mechanics and date of the debate, senior broadcasters such as John Humphreys, Jeremy Paxman, David Frost and the Dimbleby brothers are all reported to be vying for the coveted position of hosting the programme.

What is certain is that any head to head between Mr Major and Mr Blair will attract a massive audience and the BBC and ITV will both be keen to screen it. An option apparently being discussed at the moment is a simultaneous broadcast on both ITV and BBC1.

The plans could, however, come to nothing since the Liberal Democrats are considering legal action to force their participation in such a programme. The Conservative Party has said that it will not enter into a three-way debate.

…A clash between the Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown and the Chancellor Kenneth Clarke will be taking place on BBC2’s Money Programme on April 6.
