BBC Challenges ITV To World Cup

BBC Challenges ITV To World Cup

It is believed that the BBC is currently in discussions with ITV with a view to broadcasting all of England’s and Scotland’s World Cup matches next summer. Previously, ITV and BBC have shared the matches between them by alternating the group games; this year the BBC may enter a head to head to battle with the Network by showing the games simultaneously.

When this has happened in the past the BBC has always attracted the larger audience: 1994’s World Cup Final between Italy and Brazil saw ITV receiving only 4.08 million viewers to the BBC’s 13.4 million.

If the Corporation lays down the challenge to ITV, the Network has the choice of either slogging it out with the BBC or pulling out of the British games altogether and concentrating on the other matches.
