TV Viewing Round-Up: October 2012

A pretty unspectacular month sees the top programme chart dominated by news programmes. The fallout from BBC Two’s Newsnight problems saw a big rating for a special version of BBC One’s current affairs programme Panorama.

Panorama: Jimmy Savile – What The BBC Knew, featuring a contribution from Newsnight reporter Liz MacKean, pulled in an impressive audience of just under 6 million viewers. This is nearly twice as much as the regular Monday night programme which goes out against Coronation Street.

Downton Abbey held onto top spot with 11.6 million viewers, ahead of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing (which drew just under 11 million on 20th October). Misfiring The X Factor had to settle for third place, with 10.2 million tuning into the results show on 7th October.

The fantasy-drama shaped hole left in BBC One’s schedule by the mid-season break for Doctor Who, has been ably filled by the return of Merlin. The opening episode of the fifth series, which saw King Arthur and his Camelot knight investigate mysterious disappearances, proved to the most popular of the month with 7.1 million viewers.

Once upon a time Countryfile went out around midday on Sunday afternoons with practically nobody watching. Following the show’s promotion to primetime it has now become one of BBC One’s big ratings winners, so much so Simon Cowell must surely be on the verge of launching a reality version.

The edition broadcast 28th October, featuring the team exploring wonders of Anglesey, rated well with 7.3 million people. Who knew the countryside could be so interesting?

Melissa George’s post Home And Away career continues apace with her headlining role in new spy drama Hunted, from the makers of similarly themed Spooks. While it launched with a pretty reasonable 5.7 million viewers, interest tailed off and was down by over a million by the end of the month.

The runaway success of The Great British Bake Off gives BBC Two a place on this month’s programme list. The grand final, which saw John Whaite walk away with the top prize, achieved an average audience of 6.7 million.
