Rajar Q1 – Local Commercial Radio Stations Summary
Quarter 1 1997 RAJAR figures, released this afternoon, shows that commercial radio has once again moved ahead of the BBC after increasing its share of listening to 49.4%; 1% point ahead of the BBC.

Capital FM is still London’s favourite commercial radio station. Capital Radio 95.8 FM had a weekly of reach of just under 3.5 million and recorded 32,631,000 hours of listening per week during this period. Its sister station, Capital Gold, is London’s number 2, it reached 1,256,000 people every week this quarter. Nevertheless, both Capital stations saw an overall drop in weekly reach of 11.51% year-on-year.
Heart’s London station continues to increase its weekly reach, rising over 30% year-on-year. LBC Radio saw a slight rise of 3.84% in this time; its sister station London News Direct is still struggling, losing 10.55% of its weekly reach year-on-year. Jazz FM’s Manchester station, Jazz 100.4, saw a significant rise in its weekly reach, increasing by 18.31% year-on-year.
Liberty Radio is still struggling to get itself heard, recording a 0.1% listening share for this quarter.
Advertising revenue figures are released next week, a substantial rise is expected.
