Major And Ashdown May Thrash It Out On The Box

The Prime Minister is considering holding a live televised debate with Paddy Ashdown, in an attempt to expose Tony Blair’s reluctance to take part in such an event.

It is thought that Major will perform better than Blair in a live debate, and the Labour Party is said to be concerned about the effects of a poor performance on the ballot box.

Strategists from both the main parties are also considering a proposal by The Times to stage a debate between Blair and Major, which broadcasters could cover if they wished.
