Channel 4 Chairman Gets The Chop

Chris Smith, the minister for culture, media and sport, has vetoed the ITC’s recommendation that the chairman of Channel 4, Sir Michael Bishop, should have his contract extended by a further 12 months. The Government is insisting that he steps down from the post when his contract expires at the end of the year, this is rumoured to be because of his political leanings.

Bishop does not try to hide his allegiance to the Conservative Party, but his supporters say that he never took his political values to work with him. He had been instrumental in blocking moves by the last Government to privatise the TV station. He had asked for his contract to be extended in order to support Michael Jackson through his first few months as chief executive of Channel 4.
