UK: TV Advertising For Bingo On The Cards
The Independent Television Commission (ITC) is contemplating changing its rules on the advertising of bingo gambling games, in the light of recent government legislative moves that will permit the wider advertising of such gambling, including (for the first time) on television.
The conundrum for the ITC is that playing bingo below the age of 18 is illegal in the UK, but advertisements for bingo on TV will obviously be seen by people below that age.
The ITC is proposing that it alters Rule 18a (iv) and Rule 19. The first would retain the current ban on betting and gaming advertising but in future permit (alongside lotteries and football pools) bingo; changes to the second would aim to ensure that such advertising is not directed at or aimed to appeal to people under the age of 18, in the case of bingo. Comments on the proposed changes should be sent by 17 March to the ITC’s director of advertising.
