BSkyB Faces Battle For PPV Football
BSkyB is planning to bring forward its plans for pay-per-view football matches in the face of possible competition from digital bidder Digital Television Network, according to trade press reports.
DTN, the consortium led by International CableTel and backed by Merrill Lynch, is understood to have a large amount of cash set aside with which it will challenge BSkyB’s dominance in the pay-tv sports market. It is already in discussions with Premier League clubs.
BSkyB, involved in the rival British Digital Broadcasting bid, is apparently considering moving a trial PPV match to within the next few months – Liverpool’s European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final is set to be the game, providing of course the team does not get knocked out.
