ITV today released some partial details about its new digital channel ITV2 at its conference ‘The Truth About Sponsorship’. To begin with the channel will only be broadcasting for a certain number of hours, 1600 to 0230 Monday to Fridays and 0925 to 0230 at the weekend (the channel is expected to go 24 hours by 2001). GMTV2 will broadcast 0600 to 0925 throughout the week.
The channel will have the same three existing sales houses as ITV of Granada Media, TSMS and Carlton. There will eleven hundred hours of new programming per year on the channel. Programmes already commissioned include: Bedrock, a one hour youth programme broadcast during early evening; The Locker a new health and sport programme presented by Gabby Yorath and a Sunday chat show presented by Trevor McDonald which has the working title of McDonald On Sunday.
ITV will also be taking advantage of its exclusive rights to the Champion’s League by broadcasting a different match to the main ITV, meaning that it could split coverage of matches involving English teams between the two channels. There would also be the opportunity to show matches involving top european clubs from around the continent immediately after the main matches have been shown.
