Football And Media Update

Leicester City football club has confirmed that it is in talks with Diamond Cable, its local cable company, which is owned by NTL, about a possible joint venture when the Premiership TV rights expire with Sky in 2001 (see Newsline). In the meantime however, the club stressed it was committed to the present contract, but expects things to become more fluid once it expired.

Rangers football club has also verified rumours that it is in talks with a number of companies about the prospect of forming its own television company.

Meanwhile, Sunderland Football Club has announced that David Chance, non-executive director at BSkyB, is to be appointed non-executive director on the Sunderland Board, with immediate effect. David Chance, commenting on the appointment, said: “These are interesting times for football, especially those clubs like Sunderland with strong franchises, large, loyal supporter bases and modern stadia. Sunderland has all the right ingredients to become one of the UK’s leading clubs and I look forward to helping the board work towards that objective.”

The latter part of the year has seen some important developments in the relationship between football clubs and media owners, with BSkyB on the brink of buying out Manchester United (see Newsline), Arsenal in talks with Carlton (see Newsline) and the Scottish Heart’s Football Club falling in with The Mirror Group (see Newsline).
