OFTEL Restructuring Details Announced
Details of how OFTEL is to be restructured have been announced. The restructuring will aim to make a more flexible and better focussed group so that OFTEL ‘can respond quicker to new challenges in the fast-moving communications world.’
The restructuring came into affect yesterday (Tues 10 Nov), and comes after a review of OFTEL’s ways of working and internal organisation. OFTEL’s current 10-branch set-up has been replaced with a streamlined operations systems built around just two operational directorates – regulatory policy and compliance – backed up by a business support directorate.
The regulatory policy directorate will be responsible for the future development of the UK regulatory framework, while the compliance directorate is the focal point for all OFTEL’s work on enforcing licence conditions and handling complaints.
David Edmonds, director general of telecommunications says: “In the fast-moving communications world we need to ensure that our processes are capable of dealing with change, quickly and effectively.”
“A key finding of our review was that the cumbersome 10-branch structure was not conducive to flexible, agile responses to emerging issues. This could hinder us in our objective of protecting consumers.”
“I, therefore, decided to introduce a more streamlined and flexible structure, the principles of which were announced eight weeks ago. Since then we have been working with staff to decide how those changes should be implemented.”
