EU: EP Calls for Media Ownership rules

The European Parliament has welcomed a Commission Green Paper on the implications of the convergence of the telecommunications, media and IT sectors in a resolution which calls for consumer rights to be safeguarded and an examination of the consequences of convergence on employment. During its October II meeting in Strasbourg, MEPs asked the Commission for a single legislative framework to cover the information society, taking particular account of “convergence”. The Parliament’s report also calls on the Commission to come forward with a proposal for a directive on the question of ownership of the media and pluralism, to take into account all forms of electronic communication of interest to the public.
