EU: Germany to review Court action

During a two-day Health Council meeting last week, EU Health Ministers were told that the German Government is considering dropping its objections to the tobacco advertising ban. During a debate which focused on EC progress in the fight against tobacco addiction, Commissioner Flynn announced a series of measures to provide more information to consumers on additives (other than tobacco), nicotine, labelling, contraband, the sale of tobacco through automatic distributors and tar content. In lending her support to the Commission’s initiatives, the new German Minister for health, Mrs Fischer, said that discussions at departmental and expert levels had started in German ministries to review the government’s case before the Court of Justice against the directive banning tobacco advertising.
