Pre-Launch Editor Fired By Mirror Group
Mirror Group today announced that it has terminated the employment of John Mulholland, the editor-to-be of Sporting Life , the daily sports newspaper approaching its launch.
Mirror Group issued a blunt statement today which stated that the termination was effective immediately, and when questioned on the reason for Mulholland’s dismissal responded: “His continued presence would further delay and put in jeopardy the whole project.”
The announcement came amid speculation that the launch date for the daily, initially planned for Autumn, had been delayed (see Newsline). A spokesperson for Mirror Group today however, told Newsline that the Autumn launch date had not been ruled out, and that the project would continue until all factors were right for the launch.
Mirror Group is understood to have hired around 60 journalists for the new project, and added in its statement: “In the face of misleading articles, the company wishes to reassure all those journalists employed on the Sporting Life project that it will proceed under new and professional leadership.”
John Mulholland had joined Mirror Group from the Guardian, where he was media editor (see Newsline). A replacement following his dismissal has yet to be announced.
