Redundancies At The Observer

The new editor of The Observer, Roger Alton (see Newsline), was responsible for 17 redundancies at the paper this week.

Although four were voluntary resignations, the rest were compulsory redundancies and were described by a spokesperson for the title as ‘necessary cost cuts’. Apparently, there was a desperate need to get the paper’s losses more under control and the decision of the board to implement the redundancies was described as ‘necessary to achieve future stability for The Observer.’
