ITC Tightens Policy On Price Comparisons In TV Advertisements

The ITC issued guidance to broadcasters and advertisers today to ensure that viewers are not misled by price comparisons in television ads featuring sale or discount offers. The Commission believes that some of the price comparisons made are potentially misleading.

The ITC’s requirements are in line with the DTI’s Code Of Practice For Traders on Price Indications. Frank Willis, director of advertising and sponsorship, commented: “One of the ITC’s primary aims is to ensure viewers are not misled by the powerful medium of television advertising. We believe this is a simple yet important clarification of policy which goes towards achieving that aim.
