Cable & Wireless Confirm Digital Service Features
Cable and Wireless, the UK cable company, today outlined the main features of its digital service, increasing the tension in the run up to the launch of the various digital systems.
Cable and Wireless outlined a variety of features to its service. As well as providing up to 200 channels, the service will feature interactive services such as mail order catalogue shopping and telephone banking.
Significantly, Cable and Wireless are going to provide access to email and the internet, access which the group intend to broaden within three months of launch. A telephone line can also be included in the monthly subscription, and subscribers to the Cable & Wireless system will not need to buy any new equipment, as a set-top box with a built in cable modem will be included in the monthly subscription.
Lastly, Cable & Wireless provide a low-cost telephony offer, because the company operates over a high speed fibre-optic network so that the telephone line is not tied up whilst interactive services are being accessed, nor does a second line need to be installed.
BSkyB, which is due to officially launch its service on Thursday, and ONdigital both require the purchase of a set-top box on top of the monthly subscription fees, and to all reports neither service plans to provide internet or email access.
