Netflix has reached over 1.5 million paying subscribers in the UK, according to a report published this week by Enders Analysis.

The report estimates that the internet video service, which offers exclusive shows such as House of Cards and Breaking Bad, now has a paying UK audience between 1.5 million and 2 million. Netflix UK reached the one million mark last August.

“Netflix is still something of the silent intruder in the UK,” said the report’s author, Toby Syfret. “While BT Sport makes all the headlines, Netflix has released almost nothing publicly since announcing last August that it had broken the one million barrier.”

Syfret added that the main types of Netflix customer are pay-TV households and younger adults who have not yet set up more permanent households, “but generally live in free-to-air TV dwellings and enjoy the occasional binge”.

The news comes alongside the announcement that Netflix has reached an exclusive deal with Weinstein Co. for the film producers’ film catalogue starting in 2016.

Weinstein’s films include The Artist and The King’s Speech. Financial terms are yet to be disclosed.
