EU: EP Committee approves text

The EP Environment Committee has adopted its position on the text of the tobacco advertising proposal as approved by the Council. Accepting the advice of its Rapporteur, Christian Cabrol (UFE, F), the Committee voted by 36 to 7 (and 1 abstention) to adopt, as it stood, the Council’s common position on the proposal. The European Newspaper Publishers Association (ENPA) has now said it will use the European Court of Justice to challenge the legal basis chosen for the Directive by the EC if MEPs finally approve the Directive. The World Federation of Advertisers has called on the European Parliament to prevent the Common Position on Tobacco Advertising from being adopted in its present form.
