New Woman Wins Consumer Mag Of The Year At PPA Awards

New Woman magazine has claimed the Comag Consumer Magazine of the Year award in this year’s PPA Magazines ’98 Awards. The Emap Elan title was given the award following a dramatic turnaround from falling sales and lack of editorial clarity into an increase in sales of 24% a year and a sharper editorial focus. At the end of 1996 sales had fallen to 216,000; by the end of 1997 circulation, according to ABC figures, had reached just under 270,000.

Publisher of the Year (Business and Professional Magazines) was awarded to Tim Weller of City Financial Communications. Weller publishes Investment Week, Fund Stats, International Investment, Cover, IFA Online and Bloomberg Money.

Redwood Publishing’s Colour Magazine, a guide to home decorating published in association with Dulux, won the Royal Mail-sponsored Customer Magazine of the Year award.

BBC Magazines’ Top Of The Pops title scooped Seymour Consumer Specialist Magazine of the Year beating off Dennis’ Computer Shopper and Emap’s Mojo. The judges noted that the success of the television programme is no guarantee of success for the magazine, and that the publishers had worked hard to maintain its ‘winning formula’.

Editor of men’s title FHM, Ed Needham, was accredited with the John Menzies Editor of the Year (Consumer) title. Since he became editor in March last year the Emap magazine’s ABC figure has increased by 278,769 year on year.

International Magazine of the Year (Consumer) was awarded to Attic Futura’s Sugar in the light of increases in sales.

The awards were sponsored, for the fourth consecutive year, by Stephens & George Magazine.
