Cinema box offices have reported the third highest weekend take ever, grossing £9.7 million for the first weekend of the year (2-4 January). The big pullers over this period were Tomorrow Never Dies, Spiceworld The Movie and Starship Troopers.
The all-time record of £10.6m in a weekend in August 1996 was achieved mainly by Independence Day, Twister and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
