A new project combining two speech radio stations – LBC 1152 AM and News Direct 97.3FM – could be brought to the north-east of England under a new licence application by London News Radio.
North East News Radio is being officially launched with a series of public meetings this month. Interested parties can hear about the station’s plans at presentations being held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Durham and Middlesbrough.
The group’s managing director, Nigel Reeve, says: “Our station will target the 25-54 aged ABC1 market in the north-east. Currently commercial radio does not have a regional news/speech station in this area, and while we are carrying out research to determine the specifics of programming early indicators show … a tremendous demand from listeners and advertisers alike.”
London News Radio has also applied for a licence to launch a similar service in the north-west of England – North-West News Radio.
