FTSE 100 Hits New High

Share prices hit new highs today, with the FTSE index of the top 100 companies smashing through the record level of 5367.3 with a 79 points rise to 5405.3 by lunchtime.

Trade figures released today in the UK showed the country’s deficit had widened, adding weight to the theory that the economy is slowing down and interest rate rise would not be needed.

A strong performance in Far Eastern markets also boosted the FTSE.
