Top five markets account for half of ‘active’ tweeters

The US makes up the majority of Twitter’s ‘actively tweeting’ user base – by a wide margin – new findings from Statista and PeerResearch have revealed.

The study, which looked at monthly active tweeting users rather than Twitter’s monthly active users as a metric – as around 40% of users do not actually tweet, but only login to the platform – reveals that over 24% are located in the US, followed by 9.3% in Japan and 6.5% in Indonesia.

With the UK and Brazil taking the fourth and fifth spots, Twitter’s top five markets account for 50% of all actively tweeting users.

The news, which should mean good things for advertisers, will be welcomed by investors after Twitter entered the stock market earlier this month with shares priced at $45.10 – the largest Silicon Valley offering since Facebook’s listing in 2012.

Although the social networking site has never made a profit, since 2010 its revenue has grown more than tenfold, now at $317 million, and the platform will be looking to find a viable ad-funding model in future.
