BT adds co-exclusive clip rights to live football coverage

BT Sport has added co-exclusive clip rights – shared with News UK – to live UEFA Champions League and Europa League coverage.

Earlier this month, BT announced an £897 million three-year deal to broadcast live Champions League and Europa League football matches, becoming the first broadcaster to do so exclusively.

Snubbing both ITV and Sky who previously owned the rights, BT’s move saw rival Sky’s shares drop 10%.

Following the deal, the company has announced that from 2015/16, BT Sport subscribers will have access to clips from all 350 matches on a range of devices via the BT Sport app and website.

“BT Sport has already pledged to make UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League action far more accessible and affordable for customers,” said John Petter, chief executive for BT Consumer.

“The addition of clips rights means that fans need not worry about mossing any of the vital moments from matches.”
