Sony has announced the roll-out of a cloud gaming service, PlayStation Now, giving gamers the opportunity to access a selection of games without a console.
Initially available on the company’s latest smart TVs – Sony intends to offer cloud gaming to other third-party products in time – the service works by streaming data from the company’s servers.
The facility is based on technology developed by Gaikai, a cloud gaming start-up that Sony acquired for $380 million (£232 million) in 2012.
Speaking at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Japanese company’s entertainment chief, Andrew House, said that a restricted test of the service would launch in the US later this month, with a wider launch planned for the summer.
MediaTel is hosting a CES debrief at the end of this month. For more information, see our events page.
