Between one million and 1.5 million UK homes will subscribe to two or more pay-TV providers by the middle of 2014, according to Deloitte. Reaching the upper-end of the prediction will depend upon new providers launching dongles.
The company’s latest technology, media and telecommunications report predicts that by the end of the year, up to 50 million homes around the world will have two or more separate pay-TV subscriptions, with the additional subscriptions generating approximately £3 billion in revenue.
Over the coming years, Deloitte expects the number of households with multiple pay-TV subs to continue to rise as more content owners and aggregators make their content portfolios available via subscription video-on-demand.
Elsewhere, revenues from performance rights should exceed £600 million for the first time, while the value of premium sports broadcast rights worldwide is expected to increase by 14% this year to £16 billion.
“Performance rights, which are collectable from all sizes of company, from bars to broadcasters, should continue to grow over the next few years and are likely to be the fastest growing industry segment,” said Neil Allcock, lead media partner at Deloitte.
“Over time performance rights revenues should reach £1.2 billion, although the timing for this is uncertain as yet.”
