ITC Prohibits Denigration Of Rivals On Digital TV Market

The Independent Television Commission is today issuing a Directive to Ondigital, SDN, Digital 3 and 4 and all of its licensees, and Channels 4 and 5. The issue prohibits the provision of misleading information regarding competing services or the denigration of such services.

The Directive is similar to one passed by the ITC in June of last year (see Newsline), and together the Directions are intended to ensure that no viewers are mislead by rival broadcasters ‘in a way which could impede the successful launch and development of digital TV.’

Training, monitoring and compliance procedures for all sales and subscriber management staff must be in place, and licensees must maintain a register of complaints from competing service providers, available for inspection by the ITC.

Peter Rogers, chief executive at the ITC, commented: “No digital television provider should mislead or denigrate a rival platform to prospective subscribers. The only outcome of this approach would be to discourage viewers from taking up digital services. That is in no-one’s interests.”
