Newcastle In Talks Over Possible Takeover

Newcastle In Talks Over Possible Takeover

Newcastle United has sparked a frenzy of speculation after admitting it is in takeover talks but refuses to name the possible suitor. The potential mystery buyer could be prepared to pay up to £158 million for the club, the club said.

In a strong suggestion that a media company was involved, the club said no formal offer would be lodged until monopoly regulators had reported on BSkyB’s bid for Manchester United. This is not expected until next March.

It is currently rumoured that it is global media company, Time Warner, which is preparing to make the bid. Sony has also been mentioned in conjunction with a possible takeover offer. Granada, Carlton and United News & Media are also possibly in the frame, although none has made an official approach.

Carlton was involved in takeover discussions with Arsenal earlier this Autumn, but announced that it had called them off in November (see Carlton Calls Off Arsenal Takeover Talks). It appears that no company is willing to make a formal move until after the litmus test BSkyB/Man Utd deal has been investigated by the MMC.
