BBC Licence Fee Goes Through £100 Ceiling

The Government announced today that the BBC licence fee is to go up to £101 for a colour TV, and to £33.50 for a black and white licence as from 1 April 1999.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said that the rate of increase is set according to a 5 year formula, which began in April 1997, and will bring below inflation increases in the licence for the following two years. This is the highest price ever demanded for the licence, and is being justified due to the costs faced by the BBC in launching its new digital services (see Newsline).

The BBC announced that there was to be an increase in the licence fee earlier this year (see Newsline). The broadcaster commented: “The BBC is committed to providing outstanding value for money for all licence payers. The new level means households will pay less than 28 pence per day for all the BBC’s radio and television services – less than a packet of crisps or a daily newspaper.”
